Join Jon Bergmann, pioneer of the flipped classroom movement, Laurie Gagnon, Program Director for CompetencyWorks with the Aurora Institute and DC special education educator Jereamy Rose for a compelling discussion about competency as the vehicle for equity.

Though Jon Bergmann is one of the pioneers of the Flipped Classroom, he has shifted his focus to making mastery learning a reality one day at a time. He recently finished the book, The Mastery Learning Handbook, which is a practical guide to help educators make the shift to mastery learning. He has written or co-authored ten books which have been translated into thirteen languages. He currently teaches science and assists with staff development at Houston Christian High School.


Laurie Gagnon joined the Aurora Institute in 2022 as the organization’s CompetencyWorks Program Director. In this position, Laurie leads the CompetencyWorks initiative–sharing promising practices shaping the future of K-12 personalized, competency-based education; identifying trends; conducting and facilitating research that answers critical questions facing the field; and disseminating those findings widely.


Jereamy Rose is a Modern Classrooms mentor teacher at an alternative high school in S.E. Washington D.C. as a social studies teacher and instructional leader. He has been working in the field of mental health and education for over 21 years. Jereamy received his Bachelor of History/Psychology degree and Specialist in Educational Administration degree from Siena Heights University, as well as a Master’s Degree from Lynn University. Throughout his career it has been his goal to empower students, families, and educators so they have to capacity to meet their personal, professional, and educational goals.
